Vopak Opens New Oil Storage Terminal in Algeciras, Spain

March 25, 2013 [Royal Vopak] - Today, Vopak Terminal Algeciras will be inaugurated by Cornelis van Rij, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Spain; Manuel Morón, President Algeciras Port Authority; JoséIgnacio Landaluce, Mayor of Algeciras; Vicente Fernández, Secretary General of Innovation,Industry and Energy of the Government of Andalusia; and Eelco Hoekstra, CEO and Chairman ofthe Executive Board of Royal Vopak. 


The terminal is located in the port of Algeciras, Spain. Vopak Terminal Algeciras is the first terminal to offer independent oil storage services in Algeciras. This new storage facility is designed for a wide variety of oil products and has an initial storage capacity of 403,000 cubic meters, comprising 22 tanks, and a jetty for sea-going vessels(max 225,000 dwt).

Algeciras is strategically located on the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. This is a key transit area at the crossroads of the world’s main shipping lanes that connect Europe, Middle East, West Africa, America and Asia. Together with the ports of Ceuta and Gibraltar, the port of Algeciras is part of the second largest European market place for bunkering services and is an important logistic hub for oil trading activities.

Vopak Terminal Algeciras is a partnership of Vopak (80%) and Vilma Oil (20%). The terminal has been designed by Vopak and will be operated on the basis of the global Vopak Standards.
