“The (feasibility) study showed that there is not enough basis to come to a positive investment decision,” the three companies said on Wednesday in a statement.
The land that was reserved for the project is available for sale and discussions are being held with interested parties, the three added.
Vopak and Gasunie joined the Eemshaven LNG project in 2007, holding both 25 percent of the project, while Essent holds a 50 percent stake.
The terminal was scheduled to be up and running in the course of 2015. In 2007 Essent acquired all of the shares in the project from U.S. company ConocoPhillips, which as joint initiator held 50 percent of the shares.
The plans were for a storage capacity of 2 tanks, with a 180,000 cubic metre capacity, permitting LNG carriers with a capacity of up to 217,000 cubic metres, according to Vopak’s website.
