Virya, Partners to Invest in 25-MW Belgian Green H2 Project
07.26.2024 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

July 26, 2024 [Renewables NowBelgian holding company Virya Energy NV and its partners HyoffGreen and Messer have taken the final investment decision for the construction of a 25-MW green hydrogen plant in Belgium, potentially scalable to up to 100 MW.

The milestone was the last step before the start of construction works, Virya said on Thursday. According to its statement, the project will create the first renewable hydrogen production plant in its home country.

To be installed in Zeebrugge, in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the Hyoffwind facility will be able to produce green hydrogen for mobility and industrial applications, which is estimated to help save 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

The project will benefit from the already developed supply network of industrial gases specialist Messer, while at the same time responding to the demand for the installation, support and supply of green hydrogen among its customers. Once commissioned in 2026, the hydrogen plant will be a major part of the future hydrogen network connecting production sites and industrial zones in Northwestern Europe.

John Cockerill and Besix will serve as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors.
