TotalEnergies and RWE Join Forces on Green Hydrogen to Decarbonise the Leuna Refinery
03.19.2025 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

March 19, 2025 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with German developer RWE to supply 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to its Leuna refinery in Germany for a period of fifteen years, beginning in 2030. This initiative aligns with TotalEnergies’ 2030 ambition to decarbonise hydrogen usage across its European refineries.

The green hydrogen will be produced by a 300 MW electrolyser developed and operated by RWE in Lingen, with local storage facilities in place. The hydrogen will be transported via a 600 km pipeline to the refinery, preventing approximately 300,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually from 2030 onwards. This contract represents the largest volume of green hydrogen ever secured from an electrolyser in Germany.

Patrick Pouyanne, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasised the significance of the agreement, stating, “We are looking forward to developing further our partnership with RWE, our partner in several offshore wind projects in Germany and the Netherlands. This long-term contract for green hydrogen marks an important milestone in reducing our CO2 emissions at our Leuna refinery. It will be made possible thanks to the completion of the H2 backbone by German authorities and their efficient support for green hydrogen customers like our Leuna refinery.”

RWE CEO Markus Krebber highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, “We are proud to have secured the first long-term offtake agreement for green hydrogen of this size with TotalEnergies in Germany. Six months after the investment decision for the construction of the 300-megawatt electrolysis plant in Lingen, we have acquired an important anchor customer in TotalEnergies. This shows that hydrogen works with the right incentives for customers.”

TotalEnergies’ Commitment to Decarbonisation

TotalEnergies remains dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of its energy production and refining processes. A key component of this strategy involves transitioning to low-carbon hydrogen, a move expected to cut the company’s annual CO2 emissions by approximately three million tonnes by 2030.

To achieve full decarbonisation of the hydrogen used in its European refineries, TotalEnergies has already secured over 200,000 tonnes of green and renewable hydrogen annually for facilities in France (La Mede, Grandpuits, and Normandy), Germany (Leuna), Belgium (Antwerp), and the Netherlands (Zeeland).

This latest agreement with RWE marks a significant step toward TotalEnergies’ long-term sustainability goals and reinforces the role of green hydrogen in the energy transition.
