March 26, 2015 [Reuters] - Tokyo Gas Co, Japan's biggest natural gas utility, said on Thursday it would build a second liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank at a receiving terminal northeast of Tokyo, to meet growing demand in the area.

The company expects to start using the terminal in Hitachi, equipped with a 230,000-kilolitre LNG tank that can hold about 100,000-110,000 tonnes of LNG, as well as a large jetty, in March 2016.

The company will start building the second 230,000 kl LNG tank in 2018, with construction to be completed by March 2021, Executive Officer Satoru Sawada told reporters. The company did not give cost details.

A major provider of natural gas to Tokyo and the surrounding regions, Tokyo Gas expects a steady shift in the industrial sector to environment-friendly natural gas from coal and fuel oil.
