May 24, 2024 [Energy World]- Rompetrol Rafinare Constanța, the company part of the KMG International group (Rompetrol), which manages the Petromidia refinery, is looking for a partner for the construction of a green hydrogen plant, on the premises or near the refinery, the company says in an announcement posted on its website.
“From gray to green, the energy transition
We are looking for a partner interested in establishing a long-term agreement to purchase green hydrogen produced from non-biological renewable sources.
Together we build a sustainable future!
It will finance, design, build and operate the electrolysis plant near or on the premises of the Petromidia refinery, powered by energy from renewable sources. The green hydrogen produced will be delivered through the pipeline to the Petromidia Refinery”, according to the company.
“The designed capacity of the electrolysis plant is estimated at at least 11,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, requiring a source of electricity produced from renewable sources, of approximately 75 MW. The electricity supply will also be provided by you. We will supply water (treated and untreated), secure the necessary land within the refinery premises, enter into a long-term purchase agreement, and may explore the development of a photovoltaic park of 40 MW to partially support the project with renewable energy”, the company also states.
The Petromidia refinery, like other specialized units, has its own hydrogen factory, because it is necessary in the technological process of obtaining fuels, but the hydrogen produced is from fossil sources, not from renewable sources.
Rompetrol Group has also had green energy initiatives in the past. Thus, the Rompetrol gas station network was the first in Romania to install electric car charging points in fuel distribution stations, and for a while energy was free for any electric car owner. The company is now continuing the program of installing electric car charging points in the new distribution stations.
Petromidia is the largest refinery in Romania, with a capacity of five million tons per year, controlled by the national oil company of Kazakhstan, which also provides its raw material.
