October 11, 2024 [H2 View]- KT Tech will design a new hydrogen production unit and supply steam methane reforming (SMR) equipment to the Dung Quat Refinery in Vietnam.
Under a Process Design Package (PDP) contract, awarded by Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR), the NEXTCHEM (MAIRE) subsidiary will expand and upgrade the Vietnamese refinery.
The contract will ensure KT Tech designs a hydrogen production unit based on NX Reform technology, with a capacity of 22,675 metres per hour.
NX Reform reportedly enables “cost-effective hydrogen production and offers the potential to reduce the carbon footprint by incorporating CO2 capture technology.” It can also provide flexibility in feedstock and capacity to allow for production adaptability.
Once the project reaches the construction phase, KT Tech will also supply the equipment for the SMR process.
Alessandro Bernini, MAIRE CEO, claimed the contract “confirms our excellent track-record in upgrading existing production plants to enhance efficiency and achieving lower consumptions, thanks to our leading technological know-how and unparalleled process engineering capabilities.”
Plans approved by the Vietnamese Government in February (2024) revealed that the country wants to produce 100,000-500,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2030.
Additionally, Vietnam’s hydrogen energy development strategy aims to produce 10-20 million tonnes per annum of hydrogen by 2050, utilising both renewable energy and carbon capture.
