October 16, 2024 [Storage Terminal Magazine]- JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation, ENEOS Corporation, Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., and West Japan Carbon dioxide Storage Survey Co., Ltd. have entered into a consignment contract with the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security to collaborate on “Engineering Design Work for Advanced CCS Projects.” This initiative forms part of Japan’s advanced carbon capture and storage projects, with the aim of starting CO₂ storage by FY2030.
The project focuses on designing a CCS value chain that includes the separation, capture, and transportation of CO₂ emitted from ENEOS’s refineries and J-POWER’s thermal power plants in the Setouchi and Kyushu regions. The captured CO₂ will be stored in offshore aquifers along the coast of western Kyushu. The consortium of companies will conduct engineering design work for this value chain, as well as exploratory drilling in the planned CO₂ storage sites.
Following the feasibility study conducted in FY2023, this project seeks to enhance the accuracy of the proposed solutions while reducing costs. The scope of work includes procuring long lead items, evaluating storage potential, and conducting preliminary surveys for exploratory drilling.
This advanced CCS initiative aligns with Japan’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and aims to contribute to a stable energy supply. By implementing one of the country’s first full-scale CCS value chains in western Japan, the project is a key part of the nation’s strategy to achieve its climate goals by FY2030.
The four companies are committed to leading Japan’s efforts in carbon reduction and contributing to the country’s broader environmental objectives.
