Indian Oil terminal still alight
11.05.2009 - NEWS
The death toll from a fire at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) terminal in Jaipur has climbed to 11. The blaze, which began on 29 October, has further injured more than 150 people and latest reports say that four of the 11 tanks are still burning uncontrollably. About 50,000 kilolitres of fuel, mostly diesel, caught fire due to a pipeline leak at one of the tanks.

The product loss is valued at 1.4-1.5 billion rupees (€20.18-21.6 million). The company has made arrangements to supply products to areas that were receiving products.

A union petroleum ministry team has already visited the site and started its investigation into the fire. The team is to submit its report in 60 days.

IOC officials say it will take over a year to rebuild the depot which has been completely damaged.

People living in close proximity of the depot have been complaining of breathing difficulties and itching in the eyes.

An executive of a private company has filed a complaint against Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), and the IOC has been charged with criminal negligence.

The first information report was filed by Pratipal Singh, an employee of Genus Power Infrastructure Limited, a factory that is situated near the IOC depot.

The police lodged a case under Section 304 A, which relates to causing death by negligence, and other appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code.

There were three casualties in the factory and 15 others were injured.

Strong westerly winds carried away the toxic smoke and fire from nearby Pink City, sparing the lives and businesses of many.
