Fortum Chooses Stargate’s Hydrogen Alkaline Electrolyser System for Hydrogen Production in Finland
06.18.2024 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

June 18, 2024 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Fortum is set to build a hydrogen production plant in Loviisa, 90km east of Finland’s capital, Helsinki. The plant will be equipped with Stargate’s novel electrolyser and located near Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant at the Kalla test centre. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024, with commissioning expected by late 2025.

At this new facility, hydrogen will be produced using Stargate’s Gateway200 alkaline electrolyser system, which boasts a capacity of 1MW. The system will utilise electricity from the main grid and a household water source. A hydrogen filling station will be established at the plant to facilitate the delivery of hydrogen to industrial customers. The plant will serve as both a blueprint and testing bed for larger projects.

Marko Virkebau, Stargate’s Hydrogen CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are proud to collaborate with Fortum on this exciting project in Loviisa. Our Gateway 1MW alkaline electrolyser system is designed to meet the demands of industrial-scale green hydrogen production and will enable Fortum to harvest the potential of hydrogen. We are also looking forward to supporting Fortum on the next steps of their hydrogen roadmap.”

Funded entirely from Fortum’s R&D budget, the Kalla test centre is expected to operate for around two years between 2025 and 2028. The total R&D cost of the pilot project is estimated at approximately EUR 17 million. Fortum plans to explore hydrogen through small-scale projects in the Nordics as part of its strategy.
