Fidelity, Hynfra Advance USD 1.6bn Green Ammonia Project in Jordan

May 10, 2024 [Renewables Now]- Polish hydrogen company Hynfra PSA and UAE-based chemical company Fidelity Group have completed the preliminary feasibility study for their planned green ammonia project in Jordan with an estimated cost of USD 1.6 billion (EUR 1.48bn).

Jordan Green Ammonia LLC (JGA), the joint company formed for the implementation of the project, presented the results of the study to Jordan’s energy minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh on Monday, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on its website.

JGA signed a memorandum of understanding with the ministry last October to prepare feasibility studies with the aim of developing a large-scale green hydrogen project on a greenfield site near the Port of Aqaba. Under its terms, the company is obliged to submit preliminary economic feasibility and technical studies within a year of signing the pact.

During a presentation at the ministry, Hynfra’s executive vice president Pawel Jarczewski explained the stages of establishing the project, noting that work on it will begin after the completion of the final studies and the completion of contractual procedures between the company and the Jordanian government.

The construction of the plant is expected to take three to four years, as noted by the company’s advisor, Sharhabeel Madi. According to JGA’s website, the plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2028, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of ammonia.

Madi highlighted that the project has the potential to generate a minimum of 8,000 direct jobs during the construction phase, thereby alleviating unemployment in the Aqaba region. Post-completion, it is expected that about 200 direct and 750 indirect jobs will be created.

The initiative features one of several pacts targeting renewable hydrogen and ammonia production that the ministry signed last year as part of efforts to position Jordan as a green energy hub in the region.
