July 09, 2024 [Renewables Now]- Renewables developer CWP Global and Corner Brook Port Corporation (CPBC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to consider the development of a green hydrogen hub at the industrial port in the eastern Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Project Gwinya is expected to use up to 5 GW of wind power capacity to produce green hydrogen. The contemplated complex will also include a green hydrogen-powered hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant for the production of green iron, CWP said in a press statement on Friday.

CWP, which intends to hold public information sessions in July, will now proceed towards the formal filing of project registration, launching an environmental assessment process and conducting a feasibility study to assess various aspects of the proposed hub, including infrastructure, logistics and economic impacts.

“We are committed to developing this project in continuous consultation with local communities, First Nations and other stakeholders, ensuring the project aligns with regional development goals and its benefits extend beyond the energy transition,” said Steve Delaney, business and development manager for hydrogen at CWP.
