July 09, 2024 [Renewables Now]- Aslan Energy Capital announced on Monday that it has selected terrain in Mexico for a project to build a sizable solar-powered green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the acquisition of 35,000 hectares of land in a coastal area in Sonora for the Aslan Net-zero Energy Mexico (ANEM) Project.

The project, which will be realised in four phases over a 10-year period, is scheduled to start commercial operations in 2028 with the capacity to produce nearly 600,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year. This is expected to be doubled by 2030.

Preliminary feasibility studies have been completed and the front-end engineering design (FEED) is expected to start in the third quarter of 2024.

Aslan noted in the statement that it is looking to establish a localised supply chain hub in Sonora and provide an open platform to welcome strategic solar equipment manufacturers and hydrogen technology companies. The primary purpose is to serve the domestic market, with plan to export the excess capacity to the US and potentially to other destinations.

Aslan Energy is a a subsidiary of Singapore-based LNG Alliance Pte Ltd. The company is already working on a 600-MW electrolyser-based green hydrogen plant in Indonesia.
