RWE to Get EUR 619m for H2 Production, Storage Projects in Germany

July 18, 2024 [Renewables Now]- German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) will receive EUR 619 million (USD 674.09m) in funding to build a 300-MW electrolysis plant in Lingen, Lower Saxony, and a hydrogen storage facility in Gronau-Epe, North Rhine-Westphalia.

An additional EUR 199 million has been allocated to a consortium, involving RWE, for the development of a 100-MW electrolyser plant at the port of Rostock, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as part of the HyTechHafen Rostock project.

The three projects are part of the IPCEI Hy2Infra programme approved by the European Commission in February. The funds come from the federal government and the states of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Berlin will cover 70% of the funding, with the remaining 30% contributed by the federal states. RWE will invest a medium three-digit million-euro amount in the three projects.

In Lingen, the Essen-based energy group aims to establish hydrogen generation capacities of 300 MW in 100-MW increments by 2027 through the GET H2 Nukleus project. The first 100-MW electrolyser is scheduled for commissioning in 2025.

Meanwhile, in Gronau-Epe, RWE Gas Storage West plans to utilise two caverns for hydrogen storage. This facility is designed to stabilise fluctuations in hydrogen production from wind and solar energy sources. The initial hydrogen storage operations at the facility are projected to commence in 2026.

Earlier today, the German economy ministry announced that 23 hydrogen projects, covering the entire value chain, will receive EUR 4.6 billion in funding.
