November 19, 2014 [OPIS] - Matrix Service Company said on Monday that its subsidiary, Matrix Service Inc., has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP in support of infrastructure improvements at the Houston Ship Channel.

As previously announced by KMP, it is expanding storage capacity and ship dock capabilities to provide additional infrastructure to help meet the growing demand for refined product storage and dock services along the channel.

The portion of the project awarded to Matrix includes 12 above-ground storage tanks at the Kinder Morgan Export Terminal at Pasadena, Texas, with capacity in excess of 1.1 million bbl.

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is aiming to complete its oil products terminal storage expansion and marine docks project at Pasadena and Galena Park terminals by the end of 2016, a company spokeswoman told OPIS in October.

“The majority of construction is expected to be complete and in service in 2016,” she said.

Kinder Morgan said that the combined expansion investment of approximately $240 million will include the construction of 2.1 million bbl of storage between the two terminals.

Kinder Morgan will also construct a new ship dock capable of handling oceangoing vessels and infrastructure improvements at its Galena Park terminal that will significantly increase the vessel load rates across the existing ship docks.

The project is backstopped by long-term contracts with existing customers.

The new ship dock and the existing Galena Park ship docks will be capable of loading vessels at rates up to 15,000 bbl per hour.

Matrix Service Company provides engineering, fabrication, construction and maintenance services to electrical infrastructure, oil gas and chemical, storage solutions and industrial markets.

Matrix is headquartered in Tulsa, Okla., with regional operating facilities in the United States and Canada.
