Venezuela Intends to Build Tanks at Key Oil Storage Hub in South America
01.12.2012 - NEWS

January 12, 2012 [Revista Energética] - Sergio Escobar, chief executive of PetroPar (Paraguayan state oil company) confirmed that PDVSA insists on buying PetroPar’s coveted facility in the Argentinian region of Zárate, which is a strategic point for PDVSA’s positioning in South America.

“PDVSA’s intention is to both build tanks and use PetroPar’s facility”. Said Mr. Escobar, who also mentioned that PDVSA wants to store, together with PetroPar, fuel in that zone to therefore eliminate the need of buying it from Petrobras, Glencore, etc.

Mr. Escobar expressed his interest in a project of 15 or 20 years, depending on the amount of money that will be invested.

PetroPar’s facility in Zárate has a surface of 50 hectares, and it is located at a strategic waterway in the Paraná-Paraguay region. The most important petroleum multinationals have their storage facilities in and around this area.

Mr. Escobar also mentioned that “PDVSA is planning to invest a lot of money, and the intention is to become their partner without having to invest a peso, PetroPar’s contribution would be its Zárate facility and the land where it is located at”.
