February 2, 2010 [Port of Rotterdam/TankTerminals.com] - The Brazilian oil company Petrobras opened an office in Rotterdam yesterday. The office, which is located in the “Weenapoint” building in downtown Rotterdam was opened in the presence of Petrobras’ CEO Mr. José Sergio Gabrielli de Azevedo, the Minister of Foreign Trade of The Netherlands, Mr, Frank Heemskerk and the Mayor of Rotterdam, Mr. Ahmed Aboutaleb.

The Brazilian oil company is an active player in the Rotterdam port for two years now. The company leases storage capacity from Euro Tank Terminal and Vopak in the Europoort area of the port for the import of low sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) from Brazil. With around 850,000 tons of LSFO per year, the company plays an important role in the bunker market. The Port of Rotterdam estimates the share of LSFO in the total bunker market at 15-20% (between 2 and 2.5 million tons/annum).
Petrobras imports around 600,000 tons/annum with a sulphur content of 0.8%. This product is blended locally with other products to a maximum sulphur content of 1.5% which is in agreement with the stipulations of the “Northwest Europe Sulphur Emission Control Area”. To be able to offer its clientele a full service package, Petrobras also sells locally acquired high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) since May last year.
