COSCO Completes First Green Ammonia Bunkering

August 05, 2025 [Port Technology]- COSCO SHIPPING’s subsidiary, SINOBUNKER, has reportedly completed the world’s first green ammonia bunkering operation at COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry’s Dalian terminal.

The green ammonia used in this bunkering operation was entirely produced with renewable electricity, successfully closing the loop across the entire value chain — from green ammonia’s production through green power, its transportation, all the way to the bunkering and final use in vessel operations.

With its full life-cycle carbon management capabilities as well as its environmental performance and sustainability, this time’s green ammonia product has been recognised by international authoritative institutions.

It has not only obtained the ISCC Plus certification for international sustainable development and carbon but also became the first green ammonia product in the world to receive the renewable ammonia certification from Bureau Veritas, a global inspection and certification organisation, reported COSCO SHIPPING.

“This zero-carbon green ammonia bunkering operation is more than just an industry breakthrough, but also a transformational leap for China’s shipping sector to achieve the nation’s carbon neutrality and carbon peaking goals,” COSCO SHIPPING reported in a statement.

“Unlike conventional marine fuels, green ammonia combustion emits only nitrogen and water, making it a game-changing solution for slashing vessel emissions.”

Earlier this June, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Yangzhou officially delivered China’s first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containership, the COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, on Changxing Island, Shanghai.
