Construction of 100-MW Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub Begins
12.03.2025 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

December 03, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Project partners Luxcara GmbH and Hamburger Energiewerke revealed on Monday the start of the construction works on a 100-MW electrolyser at the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant in Hamburg, Germany.

The so-called Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) project is expected to become operational in the second half of 2027, “making an important contribution to the decarbonisation of the local port and industry”. The facility is planned to produce 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The fuel will be delivered to customers via the Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Network (HH-WIN) as well as a planned trailer loading station.

The HGHH project received funding approval from the federal and state governments last summer. Since then, the main construction contracts have been signed. Siemens Energy will supply the electrolyser under a contract from September 2024, while German engineering and construction company Kraftanlagen Energies & Services agreed in October 2025 to build the infrastructure for the project.

HGHH was originally launched by a consortium of Hamburger Energiewerke, Shell, Mitsubishi and Swedish utility Vattenfall. Shell and Mitsubishi later pulled out, followed by Vattenfall. Luxcara joined in 2023 and currently owns 74.9% of the project. The remaining 25.1% stake is held by Hamburger Energiewerke.
