BEIJING: Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical, China’s largest integrated chemicals firm, has won government approval to add 450,000 tonnes per year (tpy) ethylene capacity, an official website reported on Thursday.
The plant will raise capacity at its smallest ethylene facility to 600,000 tpy from the current 150,000 tpy, and also add a 300,000 tpy polypropylene facility and a 380,000 tpy glyco unit, according to the website of the National Development & Reform Commission.
It did not give an estimated investment value or a timeline for construction.
A company executive said in March 2007 that such an expansion would cost less than 10 bn yuan. Shanghai Petrochemical, a unit of top Asian refiner Sinopec Corp, is a major producer of ethylene, a key building block for plastics, synthetic rubber and chemical fibre.
