ATCO to Begin Yellowhead Pipeline Construction: Delivering Alberta Infrastructure that Enables Growth
07.28.2026 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

July 27, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- ATCO Ltd. has received final regulatory approval for its C$2.9 billion Yellowhead Pipeline project, paving the way for construction of a major natural gas transmission pipeline designed to support Alberta’s growing energy demand and industrial expansion.

The approval was granted to ATCO subsidiary Canadian Utilities Limited by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) following a comprehensive consultation and application process.

The approved project includes the construction and operation of a 235-kilometre, 36-inch diameter natural gas transmission pipeline extending from the Peers area to Fort Saskatchewan, together with a new compressor station. According to the company, the pipeline’s capacity has already been fully contracted, reflecting strong demand for additional natural gas infrastructure across the province.

ATCO said the project is expected to play a key role in supporting Alberta’s long-term economic growth, with the province forecast to experience significant increases in both population and industrial activity over the coming decades. The company believes the investment will help improve energy reliability while enabling further residential, commercial and industrial development.

Construction of the Yellowhead Pipeline represents one of ATCO’s largest infrastructure investments and forms part of its broader strategy to expand critical energy infrastructure in response to rising demand.

The company said the project demonstrates its ongoing commitment to investing in long-term infrastructure that supports economic development while strengthening Alberta’s energy network.

ATCO is a diversified global infrastructure company with operations spanning energy, housing, transportation, defence support services and industrial infrastructure. Through its subsidiaries and affiliates, the company employs approximately 20,000 people and manages assets valued at around C$28 billion.
