Chile's $2.5-B Volta Green Ammonia Project Wins Environmental Permit

January 02, 2026 [Hydrocarbon Processing]- Chile’s Volta Project, a $2.5-B green ammonia development, has obtained environmental approval, its Chilean developer Mejillones Ammonia Energy said on Tuesday.

Key context:

  • The facility in Mejillones, northern Chile, aims to reach an annual capacity of 620,000 metric tons (t) of green ammonia in two phases of 310,000 tpy each.
  • The project is the country’s first industrial-scale green ammonia development to complete the permitting process, MAE says.
  • Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with commercial operations expected in 2029.
  • At full capacity, the plant will reduce > 1 metric MMtpy of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing more than 200,000 cars from roads.
  • The project will use a 600-MW solar plant with battery storage and will reuse 100% of Mejillones’ wastewater currently discharged into the ocean.
  • Mejillones offers high solar irradiance and proximity to Chile’s mining operations, helping drive domestic green ammonia demand.
