September 26, 2025 [Renewables Now]- The Sauda municipal council in Norway has granted a zoning approval for a project to build a green ammonia production plant at the Birkeland industrial site, which will be equipped with a 270-MW electrolysis system powered by renewable hydropower.

The project, dubbed Iverson, is led by German green hydrogen plants developer Hy2gen AG and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

The nod from the Sauda authorities paves the way for the project to proceed towards technical development work before making a final investment decision (FID).

The Iverson project is aligned with Rogaland County Council’s regional plan for zero-emission industry and supports Norway’s national climate goals. It will help reduce nearly 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in its first decade of operation. Construction works are expected to create more than 300 jobs.

Wiesbaden-based Hy2gen designs, builds, and operates green hydrogen, green ammonia, e-SAF, e-methane, and e-methanol production plants using Power-to-X processes. Its current project pipeline comprises an electrolysis capacity of 3.4 GW in planning and construction, and a further 15 GW in development.

Earlier this year, the company raised EUR 47 million (USD 55.2m) in a funding round to advance its gigawatt-level pipeline of projects in Europe, Canada, and South America towards FID and ready-to-build phases.
