July 24, 2023 [riviera]- Vietnam’s Thi Vai LNG Terminal received its first 70,000 tonne commissioning LNG cargo last week.
LNG carrier Maran Gas Achilles became the first LNG vessel to call at Thi Vai LNG terminal, carrying the LNG cargo which was pumped into the 180,000 m3 cargo tank.
PetroVietnam Gas (PV Gas) operates the 1-mta terminal located in Vietnam’s Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, which came online this year.
During cargo handling at LNG Terminal 1 (PETEC Cai Mep), PV Gas received supervision, guidance and support from state agencies.
Despite high vessel density in the port area and complex weather conditions, PV Gas reported a successful operation. Two pilots supported the vessel master and four tugs helped Maran Gas Achilles to dock. Two patrol tugs, a traffic police speedboat and a border guard speedboat from Ba Ria – Vung Tau Seaport were also deployed to control traffic, and maintain safety and security.
PV Gas also received an investment approval for the Son My LNG Terminal – a joint venture with Americas terminal operator Applied Energy Services (AES) when The Binh Thuan People’s Committee granted approval on 11 July 2023.
Son My is a proposed LNG terminal in Binh Thuan province in South Vietnam. AES and PV Gas previously inked an agreement in September 2021. The terminal will have 3.6-mta capacity and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2027.

With more than 12 years of operation in Vietnam, AES is committed to accelerating the future of energy through important projects like this. We are pleased to receive approval from the Binh Thuan People’s Committee and excited to partner with PV Gas on this strategic project that will contribute to Vietnam’s energy transition and economic growth.”
Son My LNG will complement AES’ US$1.8Bn 2.2-GW combined cycle gas turbine Son My 2 power plant. Together, they will play an important role in Vietnam’s energy grid by diversifying its energy mix.
There is a push for natural gas in Vietnam, with plans to build 13 LNG-fired power plants by 2030, the first of which is expected to begin operating by the end of next year. PV Gas is reportedly in talks with ExxonMobil and Novatek to secure long-term LNG supply.
