August 04, 2022 [Capital] – The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas visited today, August 3, 2022, DESFA’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Revythoussa and inspected the new floating tank (FSU).

On the visit, he was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Giorgos Amyras, the General Secretary of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Alexandra Sdoukou, the CEO of DESFA, Maria Rita Galli and the General Manager of GasLog, Konstantinos Karathanos.

The Minister referred to the benefits of the new floating tank, which arrived in record time, and will increase the storage capacity of the Revythoussa station by 145,000 cubic meters.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, said: “From the very beginning, the Government has taken the necessary actions to shield our country against the unfavorable scenario of the interruption of the natural gas flow from Russia. Today we visited the new floating reservoir in Revythoussa which enables us to almost double the storage capacity of the station and in this way to ensure the adequacy of natural gas supply. In close cooperation with DESFA we proceeded in a timely manner with all the necessary actions so that the new tank is ready to receive the first loads by the end of August. We are systematically preparing to ensure the energy sufficiency of the country by upgrading the critical energy infrastructures. At the same time, we are proceeding with the implementation of projects that will strengthen the energy competitiveness of our country. Combined with the new stations in Corinth and Alexandroupoli, we are establishing the country as a key gateway of natural gas for the whole of Southeast Europe and we are tripling its LNG storage capacity”.

Maria Rita Galli, Chief Executive Officer of DESFA, said: “During this critical period, DESFA has been at the forefront of developments, making a series of investments to strengthen its infrastructure and further diversify Greece’s sources of supply for significantly reducing the country’s dependence on natural gas coming from Russia.

With the addition of the FSU, we increase the total storage capacity of Revythousa to 360,000 m2 and contribute decisively to securing alternative sources of supply through LNG landings and, more generally, to the country’s security of supply through our technical expertise and infrastructure.

It is our pleasure to have with us today the Minister of Environment & Energy, Mr. Kostas Skrekas, the Deputy Minister, Mr. Giorgos Amyras and the Secretary General of Energy & Raw Materials, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou, at the new Floating Storage Unit (FSU) moored nearby at the LNG terminal of Revythoussa and, which is ready to be put into operation as soon as it is required. I would also like to express my appreciation to the management and crew of Gaslog, who hosted and showed us around the vessel today, and for the excellent cooperation we have had to date. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Minister of Shipping & Island Policy, Mr. Yiannis Plakiotakis, who together with the Minister of Environment & Energy, Mr. Kostas Skrekas and their respective Ministries, for their undivided cooperation and support , played a catalytic role, so that we could bring the FSU to Greek waters in record time, responding to the energy crisis and strengthening the security of our country’s LNG supply”.
