Sunoco Plans to Close Its Heating Oil Terminal Outside Tamaqua, US
03.20.2012 - NEWS

March 20, 2012 [The Morning Call] - Sunoco Logistics plans to shut down its Taggertsville Road terminal on June 1, company spokesman Thomas Golembeski said. It is the last of four terminals that, decades ago, served the area.

Golembeski gave two reasons for Sunoco’s decision: First, the terminal was small and didn’t do a lot of business. Second, it wasn’t able to blend bio-diesel fuel, as recently required by state law.

Some local home heating oil dealers will have to find another place to get the fuel after June 1, when Sunoco Logistics plans to close its terminal on Taggertsville Road at the bottom of Hometown Hill, outside Tamaqua.

At last week’s meeting of the Kline Township supervisors, Chairman Carmen Cara said once it’s closed the closest heating oil holding tanks will be in Northumberland County and Whitehall.

According to the supervisors, local fuel oil dealers estimated the closing would result in price increases of 5 to 20 cents a gallon, depending on the type of truck and the distance it would have to travel.
