Vopak's Panama Storage Project in Feasibility

April 4, 2014 [BNamericas] - International tank terminal operator Vopak's project in Panama is still in the feasibility phase, the company's communications and investor relations office told BNamericas.

In 2011, Vopak announced its intention to build and operate 655,000m3 independent storage capacity for oil products in Bahía Las Minas, on the Atlantic.

“We are hopeful to bring the project into the next phase in the coming months,” the company said Thursday.

“With the envisioned global and regional logistic oil flows, Vopak intends the Bahía Las Minas facility to serve as a hub for both the bunker as well inter-regional make/break-bulk markets of oil products,” Vopak said in 2011.

In the region, Vopak already boasts facilities in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.

Petroleum and petroleum products were the second highest commodity shipped through the Panama Canal last year after container cargo.

Panama Canal Authority data reveals that petroleum and petroleum products totaled 40,933,000 long tons, or 19.5% of the 209,859,000 long tons that passed through the canal in 2013.

Chemicals and petroleum chemicals totaled 12,669,000 long tons; and nitrates, phosphates and potash reached 7,049,000 long tons.
