VOC Port Plans ₹41,860 Crore Investment to Become Green Hydrogen Hub

December 24, 2024 [V O Chidambaranar (VOC) port in Tamil Nadu is charting an ambitious course to establish itself as India’s leading green hydrogen-ammonia hub.

 

The port has earmarked an impressive investment of ₹41,860 crore and allocated 501 acres to four firms for developing manufacturing and storage facilities.

Pilot Projects Underway

A pilot project focusing on green hydrogen production, storage, and power generation using fuel cells is already in progress.

The initiative is expected to conclude by January 2025.

In addition, the port is preparing to showcase its potential with a green hydrogen pilot bunkering project aimed at refuelling and bunkering green hydrogen derivatives.

Record Cargo Handling in 2024

As of December 19, 2024, VOC Port achieved a significant milestone. It handled a cargo volume of 29.70 million tons, including 5.62 lakh TEUs of containers.

The figures highlight the port’s growing operational capacity and strategic importance in India’s logistics landscape.

Infrastructure Upgrades to Accommodate Growth

To sustain its growth trajectory, the port is undertaking several capacity-enhancing measures.

One notable upgrade is the widening of its entrance channel from 152.40 meters to 230 meters, enabling the accommodation of larger vessels.

VOC Port Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit emphasized the port’s unique strategic benefits.

The port has all-weather operational capabilities and is located near the East-West international sea route. It also boasts efficient turnaround times for container ships and seamless road and rail connectivity. These advantages position the port for a competitive edge in the logistics sector.
