Viva Signs LNG Pier Infrastructure Agreement

August 04, 2022 [TankStorageMag] – Viva Energy has signed commercial agreements with Geelong Port for the construction of pier and berthing infrastructure for its proposed LNG import terminal at its Geelong refinery in Australia.

Geelong Port will extend the existing refinery pier to provide an additional berth for a permanent floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to receive LNG imports. The extended pier will be licensed to Viva, which will then construct related gas infrastructure including a pipeline and treatment facility so that the gas can be supplied into the gas network

Viva announced that it was considering establishing an LNG import, supply and storage facility at Geelong in June 2020 and in December 2020 entered into memoranda of understanding (MoU) with two consortia for its development. The facility is expected to meet gas requirements for Victoria and southeast Australia as local production declines and demand increases as a result of the transition away from more polluting energy sources like coal and crude oil.

Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt says that the agreement is an important milestone in the terminal’s development.

‘Viva Energy has an almost 70-year history of operations in Geelong, is the largest shipper within the Port of Geelong accounting for over 50% of total port volumes, and is an important and longstanding customer of GeelongPort. We look forward to continuing this relationship, and working with the Port to complete this important new piece of Victoria’s energy infrastructure,’ he adds.

The agreement is still subject to a final investment decision (FID) on the project and environmental approvals.
