March 5, 2024 [H2 View]- The US Government has announced a $1m grant to Namibia Hydrogen Fund Managers to support the African nation’s green hydrogen initiatives.
Aimed at supporting the $1.15bn SDG Namibia One Fund, the grant will support the management of green hydrogen production, transportation, transmission, storage and utilisation projects in the country.
Launched at COP27 in November 2022, SDG Namibia One is hoped to accelerate the development of the green hydrogen sector and economy in Namibia.
The US funding comes through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mobilizing Investment project to address funding gaps in Southern Africa’s investment landscape.
With high winds and masses of sun, along with large land availability, some estimates have suggested Namibia could produce green hydrogen for around €1.5-2/kg ($1.63-2.17).
US Ambassador to Namibia, Randy Berry, remarked, “In the global race to develop green hydrogen, Namibia is at the forefront…I applaud the government of Namibia for recognising that hydrogen presents the country with the unique opportunity to develop a low-carbon industry.”
SDG Namibia One earlier this year (2024) took a 24% stake in Hyphen Hydrogen Energy’s 3GW green hydrogen and ammonia project planned for Tsau in the Khaeb National Park.
