May 27, 2025 [Tank Storage]- Uniper has entered a strategic partnership with thyssenkrupp Uhde to help scale the large-scale ammonia cracker, the company announced on LinkedIn.

‘Converting imported ammonia, which can be transported across long distances in a cost-effective and scalable way, into hydrogen plays a vital role in decarbonising key sectors such as energy, steel, and chemicals. At our site in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven, Germany, we are now building one of the world’s first demonstration plants of its kind with a capacity of 28 tonnes of ammonia per day,’ the post says.

Uniper COO Holger Kreetz emphasises: ‘In order to meet Germany’s future hydrogen needs, we are dependent on imports from abroad. The partnership between Uniper and thyssenkrupp Uhde is therefore an important milestone for the hydrogen ramp-up and the decarbonization of industry.’

The project receives funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to realize innovative components of the demonstration plant at the Scholven site.

Mona Neubaur, minister for economic affairs, industry, climate protection, and energy for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia states: ‘With the help of ammonia cracking technology, we are opening up the possibility of obtaining green energy from numerous regions around the world. In doing so, we are strengthening the resilience of our business location and demonstrating how sustainability and security of supply can work together.’
