Turkiye Plans Gas Pipeline to Turkish Cyprus by 2028

May 27, 2026 [Global Flow Control]- Turkiye has announced plans to construct a natural gas pipeline to Turkish Cyprus, with the project targeted for completion by 2028.

The announcement was made by Alparslan Bayraktar, who outlined two major initiatives aimed at strengthening the island’s energy infrastructure: a subsea gas pipeline and an electricity interconnection project linking the island to mainland Turkiye.

The proposed pipeline will span approximately 97 kilometres, running from Alanya on Turkiye’s southern coast to the northern part of the island. Engineering work is expected to be completed within the year, with construction progressing toward the 2028 commissioning target.

Currently, Turkish Cyprus relies heavily on fossil fuels for power generation, creating both environmental and supply security challenges. The pipeline is intended to provide a more stable and potentially cleaner energy source while supporting growing electricity demand.

Beyond domestic supply, the project is also part of a broader strategy to position Turkiye as a regional energy hub. In the longer term, the pipeline could enable reverse gas flows, allowing potential Eastern Mediterranean gas resources to be transported via Turkish Cyprus into Turkiye and onward to European markets.

The initiative follows recent diplomatic engagement, including a visit by Cevdet Yılmaz to the island, where discussions were held with Ünal Üstel. A memorandum of understanding for the pipeline is expected to be signed soon, followed by a formal intergovernmental agreement.

In parallel, Turkiye continues to advance plans for an electricity transmission cable, aimed at improving supply reliability for the island, which lies roughly 70–80 kilometres from the Turkish mainland and has experienced occasional supply constraints.

Together, these projects reflect a broader push to enhance energy security, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen regional energy integration in the Eastern Mediterranean.
