May 02, 2024 [Gas World]- Energy technology and solutions company Topsoe has signed a deal with CF Industries to help develop a potential new low-carbon ammonia plant in Louisiana.
Under terms of a contract announced today (1st May), Topsoe will provide the licensing and engineering supporting a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study.
As part of the deal, Topsoe will also license its advanced SynCOR Ammonia™ technology to CF Industries. When used with carbon capture and storage (CCS), the SynCOR technology can produce ammonia with very low carbon emissions.
Henrik Rsmussen, Managing Director of the Americas at Topsoe, says that low-carbon ammonia will help unlock the door towards a Net Zero future.
He continued, “Our technology offers a cost-effective route to producing low-carbon ammonia while also enabling carbon capture at an industrially proven scale.”
“CF and Topsoe have a long-standing relationship spanning many decades, and we are proud to extend our collaboration with this award.”
Additionally, CF Industries is also evaluating the project with Japan’s Mitsui. If the project progresses, it would produce low-carbon ammonia for use as a decarbonised energy source.
In September 2023, CF Industries said it was evaluating a joint venture to build a low-carbon clean ammonia plant at its Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, as part of a partnership with POSCO Holdings,
At the time, the duo said they would look to implement autothermal reforming (ATR) ammonia production technology.
