Throughputs of Port Riga and Port Liepaja Rise in 2014

January 12, 2015 [PortNews IAA] - In January-December 2014 the Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 41,080,400 t of cargo (+15.8%, year-on-year) and in the same period the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 5.29 mln t of cargo (+9.5%, year-on-year).


Throughputs of port Riga (Latvia) up 15.8% to 41.08 mln t

In January-December 2014 the Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 41,080,400 t of cargo (+15.8%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority, coal transshipment climbed by 6.4% to 14,093,500 t, oil products – by 42.6% to 10,204,000 t, wood pellets – dropped by 42% to 520,400 t, scrap metal – up 7.7% to 1,177,200 t, ore – down 17.5% to 366,000 t. 

The port’s container throughput increased by 1.7% to 387,603 TEUs.

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2013, the port’s throughput declined by 1.6%, year-on-year, to 35,466,700 t of cargo.

Throughput of port Liepaja (Latvia) up 9.5% to 5.29 mln t

In January-December 2014, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 5.29 mln t of cargo (+9.5%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority. Transshipment of grain climbed by 43.5% to 2.75 mln t, construction materials – by13.6% to 511,000 t, timber – fell by 12.3% to 455,800 t, oil – down 7.4% to 134,100 t, oil products – down 7.1% to 162,600 t.

The port’s container throughput dropped by 20% to 3,610 TEUs. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo cargo increased by 17% to 36,260 units. The number of calls climbed by 5% to 1,368 calls.

The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belarus. In 2013, the port of Liepaja handled 4.84 mln tonnes of cargo.
