At last weeks European Oil Storage conference the hot subject to talk about was what will happen after “Twenty- Twenty”. The IMO sulphur cap is likely to have a huge impact on the configuration of storage tanks in the major hubs. Will High sulphur Fuel Oil be replaced by a completely different product grade or do scrubbers have the future.
Not many shipping companies implemented a scrubber so far and it looks like that Marine Gas Oil is the product that most ships will use after 2020. Looking towards the current situation a lot of Fuel Oil storage tanks are not being utilized and could be “switched” into other products but not many terminals have made a decision to do so. Same goes for Gasoil tanks there is a lot of capacity available but little demand for storage. Biodiesel can be stored in these type of tanks as alternative as there is a demand for capacity of biodiesel tankage.
