Sweco Selected to Build 3MW Green Hydrogen Plant in Finland

July 04, 2024 [H2 View]- European engineering consultancy Sweco has been contracted to build a 3MW green hydrogen plant in Finland.

Having taken final investment decision (FID) on the 3H2 Helsinki Hydrogen Hub in April, Finnish energy supplier Helen revealed Sweco would undertake engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) work on the site.

The plant planned for Vousaari is expected to open in 2026 to meet demand from heavy transport and other local customers. Waste heat generated from electrolysis could also be used in Helen’s district heating network.

Sweco will be responsible for planning the project’s regional infrastructure, architectural and structural engineering, and plant design in addition to project management procurement and management services.

Having confirmed to H2 View the site will use PEM electrolysers powered by the company’s renewable assets, Helen has said electrolysers and related equipment will be designed, supplied and installed by a “different partner” to Sweco.

Sari Mannonen, Senior Vice-President, New Business and Hydrogen at Helen, claimed the 3H2 project is a “first of its kind” combining electricity, transport, heat and hydrogen.

“For Helen, hydrogen is an essential part of our new strategy, and we are committed to investing in the development of the hydrogen business. It is great to continue our smooth cooperation with Sweco by building Helsinki’s first green hydrogen production plant together,” Mannonen added.

The pilot project comes ahead of Helen’s larger-scale hydrogen plans. After 3H2’s construction, the firm plans to launch “large-scale hydrogen production” in the Vousaari power plant area.

Last June Helen alongside Neste Corporation, Gasgrid Finland and Vantaa Energy started preliminary studies for an industrial hydrogen valley in Finland’s Uusimaa region.
