Svanehoj Upgrades Safety Systems at Major Global LNG Projects

September 21, 2023 [Gas World]- Danish technology manufacturer Svanehøj is revamping its safety instrumentation at Konkan liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in India and Fos Cavaou LNG terminal in France.

Having partnered with its French counterpart Svanehøj France, the company has taken on the task of upgrading safety systems for three LNG tanks.

Having already retrofitted one tank with a new densitometer at Fos Cavaou, Svanehøj aims to replace various components for at Konkan LNG as part of Konkan’s ‘comprehensive’ plan to upgrade one-third of its tanks.

Commenting on the work undertaken at Fos Cavaou, Simon Dufour, Sales Manager at Svanehøj France, revealed that the company learned that some terminals needed work after reconnecting with LNG terminals worldwide.

“Some only need spare parts, but some need new instrumentation installed. Without new instrumentation, it can result in dangerous situations and end up shutting down any operations.”

At Konkan, although the timeline for the remaining two-thirds of the upgrade is yet to be defined, it is expected to be completed within 2-3 years

“As part of the upgrade, we will install three advanced servo-driven tank gauging systems, the LTs, to improve reliability and efficiency,” said Dufour.

“An LTD tank gauging system and two data acquisition systems will also be delivered. These components play a crucial role in optimising operation performance, collecting and analysing data, and enabling informed decision-making.”

Through investments in modern tank gauging systems and associated components, both LNG terminals aim to secure their facilities’ long-term viability and meeting the industry’s stringent safety requirements.

Located in Bouches-du-Rhone, France, the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal is owned by Fosmax LNG – an Engie company – and began operating in 2009, becoming fully operational in September 2010.

Equipped with a current capacity of eight million tonnes per annum (mtpa), the facility has plans to increase its capacity by an additional 4.04mtpa by 2030.
