April 29, 2013 [Stuff] - A 20 tonne nitric acid tank was manufactured for Stolthaven Bluff, which services the dairy industry in the region, providing storage for chemicals, vegetable oils and tallow. Crown Sheetmetal transported one of its biggest products to Stolthaven's  Bluff terminal today.

The 500,000 litre tank will be filled with acid at the port, which will be used by the Fonterra Edendale plant. Project Engineer Nigel Lee said the stainless steel tank would stand about 10.5 metres high with a diameter of 9.2m at be placed at the Island Harbour.

It took 10 staff about six weeks and 2000 hours to manufacture the tank, he said. The tank was not in the normal line of work for Crown Sheetmetal.

”It was a learning curve and now we can add it to our expertise,” he said. The tank and was the biggest product to be transported in one section on a four tonne frame.

It will take about six hours to transport the tank from Invercargill to the Bluff wharf by Southland Machine Hire. Over-height and over-dimension permits were required for each road the load travelled on.

There will be some interruptions to power supply for along the route as PowerNet made line drops that allowed the load to pass. It will be lifted into place at the port tomorrow with a 10 tonne crane, Mr Lee said.
