Stockholm Exergi to Build Carbon Capture Facility in Sweden
04.04.2025 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

April 04, 2025 [Yahoo Finance]- Stockholm Exergi (SE) has announced plans to construct what it claims is one of the world’s largest carbon capture facilities using CATACARB Enhanced Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) technology.

The facility aims to capture and permanently store approximately 800,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of CO₂, with operations expected to commence by 2028.

SE provides energy and heat to more than 800,000 people in Stockholm by burning wood and sawmill residues.

Although sustainable, this process emits a substantial amount of CO₂.

The collaboration between CATACARB and SE, initiated in April 2021, focuses on designing the core section responsible for capturing CO₂.

CATACARB technology, proven with more than 200 licensed applications in 34 countries, is being adapted for this project.

The technology leverages a 60-year database of custom-designed plants to optimise design and support for clients.

Enhanced HPC technology decreases costs through improved efficiency and flexibility in construction materials.

CATACARB CEO Gary Buckholz said: “The choice of CATACARB Enhanced HPC technology by Stockholm Exergi is notable not only for the financial advantages but also because the technology prioritises health and environment.

“Unlike some competing technologies, there are no carcinogens formed in the process. Stockholm Exergi, with help from the EU Innovation fund and the Swedish Government, is on an admirable path. We are proud to have joined them and provide continued support. We hope to help others in the industry rise to the challenge of carbon capture with confidence.”

In a related development, TotalEnergies, Equinor and Shell have reached a final investment decision for the second phase of the Northern Lights Carbon Capture and Storage project in Norway.

This phase will increase the project’s transport and storage capacity from 1.5mtpa to more than 5mtpa of CO₂ by 2028.

This decision follows a 15-year commercial agreement between Northern Lights and Stockholm Exergi.
