Shell Launches New LNG Fueling Station in Germany

August 17, 2023 [LNG Prime]- A unit of LNG giant Shell has recently opened a new LNG fueling station for trucks in Germany as the demand for the fuel in the country’s transport sector continues to grow.

The new German LNG station is located in Flörsheim and it is Shell’s 37th LNG station in Germany.

Shell Germany launched the 30th station in August last year and teamed up with German giant BMW and logistics firm Elflein for the supply of bio-LNG.

Shell is building what it says is the largest bio-LNG production plant in Germany at its Rheinland refinery near the German city of Cologne.

Once online later this year, the facility will have the capacity to produce 100,000 tons of bio-LNG per year.

The quantities produced in the plant can cover the annual needs of around 4000 to 5000 LNG-powered trucks, opening up the possibility of saving up to a million tons of CO2 per year compared to conventional diesel trucks, according to Shell.

A spokesperson for Shell recently told LNG Prime that the construction of the facility “is progressing”, without providing any additional details.

According to data by Gmobility, there are now 692 LNG stations in Europe.

Germany continues to be the leader with 179 LNG fueling stations for trucks, followed by Italy with 142 stations, the data shows.

Combined, these two countries host almost half of all the LNG fueling stations in Europe.
