January 22, 2025 [Offshore Energy]- Singaporean energy giant Sembcorp Industries, through its wholly-owned subsidiaries Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India and Sembcorp Development, has signed two non-binding memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the government of India’s Odisha to explore the development of a green hydrogen plant and an industrial park in the state.

Specifically, Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India inked an MoU with the Industrial Promotion & Investment Corporation of Odisha to develop a production facility for green hydrogen and its derivatives, with an anticipated production capacity of 720,000 metric tonnes per annum. The facility is expected to generate over 2,000 employment opportunities during its operational phase.

As for Sembcorp Development, the company entered a non-binding MoU with Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation to assess the potential for developing an industrial park in Odisha.

Both MoUs are said to build upon the framework outlined by the governments of Singapore and India to enhance bilateral collaboration, with a focus on six key pillars, including sustainability.

To note, Sembcorp, reportedly, has a gross renewables capacity of almost 6 GW across 13 Indian states and seeks to deepen its presence in the country.

In 2024, Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India revealed it is in discussions with Bharat Petroleum to enter into a definitive joint venture agreement for renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across India.

Furthermore, the company signed an agreement with Japan’s NYK, Kyushu Electric Power and Sojitz for the marine transport of green ammonia from India to Japan. According to NYK, the deal is based on the premise that approximately 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia will be produced annually through this project and transported to the Kyushu region.
