Saudi Aramco Taps KBR JV for Strategic Gas Infrastructure Upgrade
04.24.2025 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

April 24, 2025 [Chemical Industry Digest]- Saudi Aramco has awarded a pivotal contract to modernize and enhance sulphur recovery systems at two of its flagship gas processing facilities—Haradh and Hawiyah. The project has been entrusted to a joint venture between U.S.-based engineering company KBR and Saudi Arabia’s AMDCE, operating under the name KBR-AMDCE.

Boosting Sulphur Recovery Efficiency

Announced via social media, the joint venture confirmed that the project centers on significantly improving the performance of sulphur recovery units (SRUs). Upon completion, the upgraded systems will raise recovery efficiency from the current 95% to an exceptional 99.9%, marking a major leap in processing capability and environmental performance.

Drastic Reduction in Sulphur Dioxide Emissions

The upgrade will also play a crucial role in cutting sulphur dioxide (SO₂) emissions. Presently at 4300 parts per million by volume (ppmv), emissions will drop sharply to just 250 ppmv—meeting and exceeding regulatory thresholds set by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA). This aligns closely with Aramco’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Driving Cleaner Energy Infrastructure

The initiative is part of Aramco’s broader strategy to invest in cleaner, more efficient energy infrastructure. By modernizing core gas processing facilities, the company not only strengthens its operational excellence but also reinforces its leadership in sustainable oil and gas practices.

A Strategic Step Toward Environmental Excellence

With this project, Aramco signals its dedication to advancing environmentally responsible technologies in the energy sector. As reported by globalflowcontrol.com, the collaboration with KBR-AMDCE marks another milestone in the Kingdom’s journey toward achieving lower emissions and greater energy efficiency.
