Sarawak Advances in Green Energy with Methanol Project

January 14, 2025 [The Star]- Sarawak is advancing its transition to clean energy with plans to produce green methanol for marine fuel.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the green methanol project by Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd highlights the state’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and establishing a low-carbon footprint.

“Green methanol is a product aligned with the transition to green energy. In future, it will be a fuel source for the shipping industry, and we will set up bunkering facilities here,” he said.

Abang Johari spoke to reporters after performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the green methanol plant at Tanjung Kidurong in Bintulu on Tuesday (January 14).

He said the project would also enhance Malaysia’s position as a country committed to energy transition.

“Sarawak plays an important role in supporting Malaysia in this aspect,” he said.

In his speech earlier, Abang Johari said green methanol would be produced using renewable energy such as hydrogen.

He said it could serve as a green energy source for ships and be processed as a raw material for other products.

“This project will show the world that we are actively participating in and shaping the green energy transition,” he said.

Sarawak Petchem chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain said the green methanol project is another step towards sustainable energy solutions.

He said the project would use water electrolysis technology powered by renewable energy, along with captured carbon dioxide as feedstock in methanol synthesis.

“This green methanol can be used as sustainable marine fuel, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which is crucial in addressing climate change.

“With this initiative, we are not only addressing the energy needs of today but moving towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future,” he said.

At the same ceremony, Abang Johari also witnessed the sail-away of Sarawak Petchem’s export shipment of 10,000 tonnes of methanol to China.

The methanol was produced at Sarawak Petchem’s methanol complex in Tanjung Kidurong, launched on July 22 last year.
