June 11, 2024 [Chem Analyst]- Petrobras, in continuation of its announcement on April 17, 2024, declares that its Executive Board has sanctioned the recommencement of operations at the fertilizer plant Araucária Nitrogenados S.A. (ANSA) on June 6, 2024. ANSA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company situated in Paraná state, has remained inactive since 2020.

Immediate commencement of all necessary procedures for the plant’s reopening will be undertaken, encompassing the issuance of notices for the procurement of maintenance services and essential materials. Concurrently, Petrobras grants authorization to ANSA to engage in negotiations to rehire its previous employees, contingent upon approval by the Superior Labor Court (TST). The relaunch of operations is anticipated in the latter part of 2025.

Following the assessment of the company’s strategic directives sanctioned last year, Petrobras has reintegrated investment in fertilizer production into its portfolio, as outlined in the 2024-2028+ Strategic Plan.

Adjacent to the Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery – REPAR, ANSA boasts a production capacity of 720,000 tons/year for urea, 475,000 tons/year for ammonia, and 450,000 m³/year of Automotive Liquid Reducing Agent (ARLA 32).

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., commonly referred to as Petrobras, is a state-owned Brazilian multinational corporation operating in the petroleum industry, with its headquarters located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The company’s name translates to Brazilian Petroleum Corporation — Petrobras. Established in 1953 during the presidency of Getúlio Vargas, Petrobras was founded with the slogan “The Oil is Ours” and was granted a legal monopoly in Brazil. At its inception, Brazil’s daily oil production was merely 2,700 barrels. In 1961, the REDUC refinery near Rio de Janeiro commenced operations, followed by the opening of its Cenpes research center in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, which remains one of the largest energy research centers globally. In 1968, Petrobras founded Petrobras Quimica S.A., a subsidiary specializing in petrochemicals and the conversion of naphtha into ethene.

The company operates across six key business sectors, with revenue rankings as follows: Refining, transportation, and marketing – involving refining activities, logistics, transportation, trading operations, as well as exports and imports of oil products and crude oil, along with petrochemical investments within Brazil. Exploration and production activities involve the exploration, development, and extraction of crude oil, natural gas liquids (NGL), and natural gas within Brazil. Meanwhile, distribution primarily centers on supplying oil products, ethanol, biodiesel, and natural gas to wholesalers and through the retail network of Petrobras Distribuidora S.A. within the country. Gas and power activities involve the transportation and trading of natural gas and LNG, as well as the generation and trading of electric power, alongside the fertilizer business. Internationally, the company engages in exploration and production of oil and gas, refining, transportation, marketing, distribution, gas, and power operations outside of Brazil. Lastly, the Biofuels sector is dedicated to biodiesel production and its co-products, ethanol-related activities such as equity investments, production, and trading of ethanol and sugar, as well as the surplus electricity generated from sugarcane bagasse.
