Oman and Netherlands Forge Green Hydrogen Corridor Agreement

December 19, 2023 [SQ]- The Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Oman and Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) have joined forces with the Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals, and GasLog, signing a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) during COP28 in Dubai. The agreement marks a significant step towards realizing the world’s first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor.

The JSA outlines plans for a detailed assessment of an open-access hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and export facility in Oman. The collaboration also involves the provision of specialized vessels by GasLog for liquid hydrogen transportation. The primary objective is to establish a green hydrogen corridor between Oman and the Netherlands, with Zenith Energy’s terminal as the destination for the import, regasification, and distribution of Oman-produced hydrogen to local off-takers and European industries.

Guided by Oman’s Vision 2040 and a commitment to reach net zero by 2050, the government of Oman seeks to diversify its economy using abundant natural resources. The collaboration aims to leverage Oman’s strategic location for supplying the European and Asian markets. Abdulaziz Al Shidhani, Managing Director of Hydrom, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in overcoming challenges in storing and transporting hydrogen on a large scale.

The collaboration builds on an earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during COP27 between Oman and the Netherlands. This MoU aimed to advance bilateral collaboration, supporting the establishment of import and export corridors and strengthening cooperation in clean hydrogen facilities. The recent agreement at COP28 signifies a new milestone, as the Omani-Dutch partnership works towards realizing the envisioned import/export corridor.

Dorine Bosman, Chief Investment Officer at Port of Amsterdam, expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting the strong foundation for fruitful cooperation between Oman and the Netherlands. The partnership aims to establish the port of Amsterdam as the gateway for Omani-produced green hydrogen to the European market, aligning with Oman’s commitment to a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem and green energy future.
