Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor Secures EU Support for 2,500 km Clean Energy Pipeline
07.03.2025 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

July 03, 2025 [Hydrogen Fuel News]- The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC) is picking up steam with a new feasibility study, with a big push from the EU in the form of €6.8 million in funding from the Connecting Europe Facility. This ambitious project will span about 2,500 kilometers, linking Finland to Germany and passing through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. Once it’s up and running, it’ll allow for the cross-border flow of green hydrogen produced via electrolysis, with operations set to kick off sometime in the early 2030s.

A Major Step for Europe’s Hydrogen Transition

The project is being headed up by six national transmission system operators (TSOs), including key players like Gasgrid Finland and ONTRAS. It’s not just about piping hydrogen from point A to B — the corridor plays a big role in Europe’s push toward a clean energy future. One of its key goals? Cutting up to 37 million metric tons of CO2 by 2050. On top of that, it’ll strengthen energy security and help tie Northern and Central Europe into an expanding European Hydrogen Backbone.

Still in the Planning Phase – But the Potential’s Huge

Right now, the NBHC is in the middle of a feasibility study, which will run through 2027. But once the planning is done and things move into the next phase, this corridor is expected to be a game-changer. It could open the floodgates for major funding in hydrogen infrastructure, kickstart real momentum in industrial decarbonization, and serve as a catalyst for deeper regional collaboration around the Baltic Sea.
