July 01, 2025 [Nautical Voice]- Australia’s NH3 Clean Energy, previously known as Hexagon Energy Materials, has successfully raised $710,000 to propel its WAH2 ammonia project, which focuses on clean ammonia export and bunkering. The funding, sourced from both existing shareholders and new institutional investors, will facilitate essential project advancements, including engineering design and commercial negotiations.
Funding Allocation and Project Goals
The recent capital injection will be directed towards several critical areas of the WAH2 project. Key initiatives include the early stages of front-end engineering and design (FEED), which is slated to begin in the third quarter of 2025. Additionally, the funds will support ongoing commercial negotiations for ammonia offtake agreements and the establishment of strategic partnerships.
NH3 Clean Energy is also focusing on securing project financing through institutional investors and infrastructure funds. The company emphasizes the importance of engaging with government and stakeholders to navigate the approval processes and develop multi-user infrastructure. Chairman Charles Whitfield expressed gratitude to shareholders for their support and highlighted the successful equity placement, which achieved a 67% premium over the last placement price. This reflects the company’s commitment to efficient expenditure and value creation as it approaches the final milestones before making a final investment decision (FID) for the WAH2 project.
The WAH2 initiative aims to provide low-emission ammonia to the rapidly decarbonizing economies of the Asia Pacific, particularly Japan and South Korea. It is also positioned as a sustainable “bunker” fuel source for bulk carriers transporting iron ore from Australia to Asia, with production expected to commence in the latter half of 2029.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Developments
In early 2025, NH3 Clean Energy entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Pilbara Ports Authority to explore the logistics for loading and exporting 600,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of clean ammonia from the WAH2 project. This partnership is crucial for establishing the necessary infrastructure to support the project’s ambitions.
Furthermore, in June 2025, NH3 Clean Energy announced a joint development agreement (JDA) with Pilbara and Oceania Marine Energy. This collaboration aims to create low-emission ammonia bunkering operations at the Port of Dampier, further enhancing the project’s viability and environmental sustainability.
As NH3 Clean Energy moves forward, the focus remains on building a robust framework for the WAH2 project, ensuring it meets the growing demand for clean energy solutions in the region.
