New SAF Unit 4 Under Development at Chane Terminal Botlek
09.16.2024 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

September 16, 2024 [Chane]- Construction of SAF Unit 4, an expansion of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) distillation and storage capacity at Chane Terminal Botlek, is progressing well. The SAF market is now in an exciting transition, says Michiel Flier, Business Unit Director at Chane: “Now we are getting to an interesting point where this niche market is scaling up to a real commodity market, with more and more SAF being used in the coming years to make flying more sustainable.”

“The European Union has stipulated that 2% of all jet fuel must be SAF, from 1 January 2025. In 2030, that will increase to 6%, and so on,” Flier continues. “Demand is increasing, so production has to be scaled up. That’s quite an exciting moment: how will that demand develop, and when will additional production start up?”

Seeing and seizing opportunities

So there are opportunities in the SAF market, and Chane Terminal Botlek is seizing them. Capacity is now being scaled up to meet this greater demand. Construction is planned for completion in early 2025, and it is running well on schedule. Crucially, the terminal already has a lot of experience with the product: “The technology around SAF is well known to us”, says Van Roermund. “We have been distilling and operating for four years without any problems, and we have always delivered the product according to specification.”

With that experience, some improvements are also being made in the construction of this new Unit, says Flier: “Especially in terms of efficiency, we have been able to adjust a few things, which now allows us to set up an enhanced version. Also, there will continue to be opportunities to distil all kinds of other fuels or chemicals in our production units.”

An accessible entry into the SAF market

This system created by Chane is unique, says Flier: “With us, you can enter this market in a very accessible way. From the distillation of SAF to connections, including supply and removal by ship, barge, rail, truck and pipeline. This allows customers to grow with us as the market matures.”
