Mozambique to Build First Oil Refinery within 2 Years

May 08, 2025 [Xinhua]- Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Wednesday announced the construction of the country’s first oil refinery, a project to be completed within two years and produce 200,000 barrels of fuel per day.

Mozambique is expected to produce a variety of fuels including gasoline, diesel, naphtha and jet fuel (Jet A1), Chapo said at the official opening of the 11th Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference and Exhibition.

The project, led by state-owned Petromoc in partnership with Nigerian group Aiteo Eastern, aims to meet domestic fuel demand while also serving export markets in neighboring countries.

“This is a transformative project that will position Mozambique as a relevant actor in the liquid fuels value chain,” said Chapo. “It will positively impact job creation, especially for our youth, increase GDP, reduce fuel imports, and boost exports, thereby contributing to the balance of payments of the Republic of Mozambique.”

In addition, the president unveiled another strategic initiative of building a 1.5-billion-U.S.-dollar fuel pipeline connecting the port city of Beira to neighboring Zambia.

With an estimated four-year implementation timeline, the pipeline will carry up to 3.5 million metric tons of petroleum products annually and include storage infrastructure on both sides of the border.

“This project will reduce the movement of heavy fuel trucks on our roads, especially along National Road No.6,” the president said.
