November 29, 2022 [New Atlas] – Latest package of newbuild carriers will be constructed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding

A consortium of Malaysia’s marine and offshore giant MISC – a subsidiary of national energy behemoth Petronas, Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K-Line) plus China LNG Shipping have won long-term charter contracts for five newbuild liquefied natural gas carriers for QatarEnergy.

Qatar is forging ahead with its ambitious plans to boost the emirate’s nameplate LNG capacity from the current 77 million tonnes per annum to 110 million tpa and then further to 126 million tpa.

MISC on Thursday confirmed the consortium had been awarded long-term time charter contracts by QatarEnergy for five additional newbuild LNG carriers to be built by China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

The value of this contract was not disclosed.

Together with the seven long-term time-charter contracts won in August, the consortium now has a dozen newbuild LNG carriers for QatarEnergy on its books.

These LNG carriers will be equipped with eco-efficient technologies such as X-DF 2.1 engines with an intelligent control by exhaust recycling (iCER) System, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The 174,000-cubic metre capacity vessels are expected to be delivered commencing 2025 and will enable QatarEnergy to transport volumes to customers around the globe.

“We would like to thank QatarEnergy for their continuing trust and confidence in our joint capabilities and expertise in delivering safe, efficient and reliable LNG shipping solutions. We would also like to thank our consortium partners for the support and collaboration in making this award possible. We look forward to add [sic] value to the partnership as we continue to play a progressive role in the global LNG shipping industry,”saidMISC’s chief executive, Rajalingam Subramaniam.

“In this evolving energy industry, collaborative partnerships are vital to ensuring success in fulfilling the growing demand for energy and achieving sustainable value creation for all our stakeholders. As we navigate the evolving energy industry ahead, we will continue strengthening partnerships to continue to build a progressive, sustainable, and successful future.”

MISC’s gas assets & solutions’ fleet currently comprises two LNG floating storage units, 30 LNG carriers and six very large ethane carriers.
